Audi RS 5 - even more quattro.

Thirty years after the original Audi quattro captivated motorists around the world, the new Audi RS 5 Coupé does the tradition proud with a combination of high-revving V8 power, super fast S tronic twin-clutch gear shifting and a new evolution of the world famous all-wheel-drive system.

Developed by Audi’s high-performance subsidiary quattro GmbH, the RS 5 can trace its roots not just to the original or ‘Ur’ quattro launched in 1980 – but also to the critically acclaimed R8 sports car, whose V10 FSI engine provides the technological basis for the new hand-built 4.2-litre V8 FSI unit.

With an electronically-governed top speed of 155mph (which can be raised to 174 mph at customers’ requests), the RS 5 Coupé can sprint from 0-62 mph in just over 4.5 seconds – and to 125 mph in only another 11 seconds.  Peak torque of 430 Nm is available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm, and at 8,250 rpm the ultra-powerful eight-cylinder engine puts out 450 hp.  And yet it can still average 10.8 litres of fuel per 100 kms driven – a figure its rivals can’t come close to matching.

It is the first time Audi’s seven-speed S tronic transmission has been mated with a high-revving engine – a task it performs with ease, as it was designed for 9,000 rpm.  Certain aspects have been modified, such as the oil management system and the clutches, and the gear ratios have been adjusted.  Seventh gear is relatively tall to reduce fuel consumption.

The RS 5 Coupé also features the new generation Quattro all-wheel-drive system, with self-locking crown gear differential and torque vectoring.  Maximum efficiency and immediate response are guaranteed, while grip becomes even better.
